“Think outside of the box.
Work outside of the box.
Dream outside of the box.
Succeed outside of the box.

The ordinary think inside of the box,
the extraordinary think outside of the box,
but genius thinks inside, outside,
below and above the box.”

CELEBRATING PLACEDNESS

A TRANSLATEABLE IDEA!

Environmental Planner

Speaking of England Sue Clifford , Angela King talk of a land of extraordinary variety, filled with unique buildings, captivating landscapes, and diverse people and wildlife. But like most 'places' this diversity is under siege. Mass production, increased mobility, and the forceful promotion of corporate identity have brought with them standardized stores, farms, factories, and front doors. Filled with the most distinctive tidbits of English culture past and present, places are threatened, species are going extinct.

Places need more care or we risk losing our placedness. It is said that you take away our wallets full of money you have nothing of value steal our 'places and our placedness' then you have everything that really matters! We do not own places, we occupy them and beong to them. We are obliged to treat the places we belong to with UNCONDITIONAL POSITIVE REGARD UPR  The doctors and nurses who care for us do this for us. We need to care for our places in the way our doctors and nurses care for us no IFS ... NO buts..

Author and radio producer Tim Dee has published Ground Work, a collection of writing on new and enduring cultural landscapes in Britain, drawing on the very best of the current flowering of nature writing as well as other original non-fiction.... Ground Work comes thirty years after Common Ground’s ground-breaking Second Nature, a collection edited by Richard Mabey (with Sue Clifford and Angela King) and published by Cape in 1984 .... SENSIBILITY COI

WORK-IN-PROGRES

Sometimes we experience UPR (Unconditional Positive Regard) in our lives but when we are under the care of carers such as clinitions and especially 'nurses' it can be be a cathartic experience.

In the CARINGprofessions UPR is a professionl expectation and a standard by which Key Performance Indicators (KPI) are meassured! You'll know it when you've experienced UPR it is always LIFEchanging and very often LIFEsaving!

People in the caring professions cannot and should not be expected to LOVE a stranger but they can be required to deliver UPR !! SO, what about people who care? for places, can we expect them to unfailingly deliver UPR? If not why not? If so how so?

We have LANDcares but as yet PLACEcares haven't come together in and THEagency is looking at how that can be done. Given that bureaucracies have become RULESridden in the outcome seems to be the case that with the management of 'places' there is no room for the caring for 'places' and no clearly space left for UPR.

SO, it seems that PLACEcaring needs to be done OUTside bureaucracies and the realm of 'managerialism' and well away from MANAGERIALfiefdoms ideally.

Why? From OUTside bureaucracies and RULEpedlars' empires rules can be challenged, questioned, circumnavigated, and even broken if needed. All too often bureaucratic STUMBLEstones are there  to get in the way of'PLACEDNESS' with UPR being a bridge too far.

Sadly, PLACEcaring, PLACEmaking, and PLACEscaping are damaged 'collaterally' on the grounds that the status quo must be managed and maintained. Consider what might be te driver here.

The AGENCY'S purpose for being is to challege the vectors that caues dystopia in placedness and promote UGR in PLACEmanagement.

SO

Come join a COALITION OF THE WILLING

PURPLE DENOTES nobility of intent .... empowerment to act ... ambition to change .... creativity ... dignity ... independence .... pride in placedness .... peace, mystery .... the magic that can happen when people cooperate and collaborate

The world is full of magical things patiently
waiting for our wits to grow sharper.

COALITIONS OF THE WILLING IN zonePURPLE

A COALITION OF THE WILlING (COTW) in a zonePURPLE are SELFestablished to fulfil a project in their precinct, their neighbourhood , their region in the context of their 'placedness'.

Typically, COWDs are auspiced by an organisation such as a service club such as Apex, Rotary, a MEN'Sshed, a charity etc. ect.

A COTW may be short lived and PROJECToriented or they may be long lived. Often, they are auxiliary groups realising projects for a school, local museum, a REPAIRcafe, whatever.

Got a project? Are your representatives failing to do what should be done? Need help putting a COTW together? Talk to some friends who have an interest in placemaking.

WHAT IS WORTH WHAT, HOW AND WHY?

Out of necessity a network of networks, a Coalition of the Willing (COTW) that is coming together to better facilitate BETTER UNDERSTANDINGS and offer a wider range of options for PLACEmaking for precincts, neighbourhoods and communities on the KanamalukaTAMAR/ESK in a local, regional national and indeed a global context.

Not only is this COTW everyone within it, those in connected groups might best understood as a place's Community of Ownership and Interest. Bureaucratic administrations want to call these people "stakeholders" and that is only a relevant understanding IF groups of people have direct financial in a place, space, entity, whatever but 'placedness' is a more expansive idea than anything that can be defined by and measured in 'money terms'.

Property investors' and developers' purposefulness is to acquire places and spaces in order to fulfil their primary objective, generate profits.

To help put this in a perspective and ask yourself what is the 'purpose' in mining gold?

  1. Is it make a profit? or
  2. Is it acquire a resource called gold?
It takes but a moment to understand that unless one acquires the resource no profit can be made IF gold has a money value.

AND there is yet another 'purpose' that might be considered. For instance the Incas of Southern Americas' purpose in mining gold was to appease and honour the GODS.  The Inca considered gold to be the "sweat of the sun" (Inti), regarding it as divine, immortal, and a symbol of the sun's power. It was used for religious, decorative, and status-enhancing, not commercial, purposes.

Based on historical estimates, the gold mined by the Incas constitutes a very small, negligible percentage of the total gold ever mined in human history.

Nonetheless, the amount of gold taken from the Inca Empire by the Spanish was enormous for the 16th century, it is dwarfed by modern industrial mining, with roughly 86% of all above-ground gold having been extracted in the last 200 years.

Here is a breakdown of the context:

  • Total Gold in Existence: As of 2020, about 201,296 tonnes of gold have been mined throughout human history.
  • Inca Gold Volume: The vast majority of the "Inca treasure" was accumulated over generations, not mined in a single short period.
  • Estimates suggest the Spanish plundered over 100 tons of gold from the Americas in the first half-century of conquest.
  • Significance: While the Inca gold represented a massive portion of the world's circulating gold in 1532—allegedly 14 times greater than all the gold in Europe at that time—it represents far less than 0.1% of the total cumulative global gold stock of over 200,000 tonnes.
While by-and-large the world's investors and developers might think of this  200,000 tonnes of gold as wealth their real wealth is invested in the control of other resources – multiple and various ... power. As an 'element' gold's utility is marginal say compared to iron, carbon, indeed silver. Yet there is a Gold Standard.

Approximately 10% of all gold mined throughout human history is considered lost, unrecoverable, or permanently scattered back into the environment. However by comparison silver is an interesting element.

Approximately 1.74 million metric tons of silver have been mined throughout human history, with roughly 560,000 metric tons of identified, economically minable reserves remaining in the Earth's crust. While over 60 billion ounces have been extracted, much of this has been lost, consumed, or is held in non-bullion forms.

So, arguably critical thinkers need to apply some thinking time to the values invested in 'placedness' and require their 'representatives' and 'governors' to do so as well. If morality and ethics enter the considerations then Gandhi has something to say and muse upon
