Good afternoon,
I have reviewed the action that I took that caused Mathew Garwood to take the action that he has taken. Also, I am struggling to bring to mind the backgrounding in that I am currently managing pain variously on a scale of 5 to 8 out of 10 depending on my next dose of pain suppressant. I am home from a 16 days stint in hospital now for around 21 days or so after an accident with pain remaining an issue and likely to be ongoing for some time yet. I am receiving transition care at home with a medical procedure ahead of me tomorrow.
That said my best recollections and assessment of what led up to all this is:
- I was alerted to a post on SOCIALmedia indicating that “ The Mayor of the Mall” had parked inappropriately.
- I made a SCREENsnap of the post and overlayed with text and graphics as a protest against possible expensive internal litigious behaviour at Town Hall that was likely to cost the ratepayers a loss of money and opportunity.
- I DID NOT post the image on SOCIALmedia as might otherwise have done but instead addressed to ALL Councillors as an indication of my concern about the level of dysfunction on exhibit ate Town Hall.
- I was not aware that “ The Mayor of the Mall” in the original SOCIALmedia post referred to the proprietor of THE COFFEE REPUBLIC in the Mall, one Robin Smith apparently and remained ignorant of that euphemism until Matthew Garwood brought on his action. I’ve since been told that it is common knowledge but not having had occasion to visit the Mall for many years, so I am unlikely to have discovered that ‘fact’.
- I was of course mistaken in making the assumption that the SOCIAL post didn’t refer to Mayor Garwood, but at the time I had no reason to question the euphemism.
- I make a personal rule to be transparent in my communications and to I hold myself as accountable as I expect people holding public office to do. Had I been made aware of my mistakenly attributing “ The Mayor of the Mall” euphemism to Mayor Garwood would have unreservedly apologised to him and the Councillors. There is no good reason not to!
- Institute43 is no secret and is a loose network of people who engage with each other towards research into ‘PLACEDNESS’, cultural geography and cultural production.
- Mayor Garwood complains that I have published his private mobile number. I have it on my records from the time he and ALL Councillors published their details on the Council’s website. That is no longer the case with four Councillors withholding that information for their own reasons.
- Given all of the above, I am quite prepared to make a fulsome public apology to the Mayor and ALL Councillors in ANY form they deem to be appropriate under the circumstances. Not to do would be counter to the standards that is expected of people holding public office.

The problem that I see with your actions is that you've proceeded to defame Mr Garwood without checking to see whether any of the material was true, which means that he can't use any good faith defence.
I'm about to travel to Hobart. I'm not available until tomorrow I'll give some consideration about the matter generally.
